There is nothing worse that waking up on a beautiful morning in Perth and seeing huge bags under your eyes.
They make you look old and tired.
Mostly they are temporary but sometimes they can last days or even weeks.
What are Bags?
• Swelling under the eyes or around the eyes and eyelid.
• Bags or excessive skin under the eyes that appears to puff out or hang.
• Itchy, red or irritated eyes.
• Inability to open or close eyes completely due to puffiness.
• Dark circles accompanied by sagging skin under the eyes.
Why is Perth particularly bad for bags?
Dehydration
We live in a hot dry climate and itt is easy to get dehydrated.
If your bags are caused by dehydration then drinking plenty of water will help a lot. Also avoid beverages with lots of caffeine and bubbly beverages including soda, as these can contribute to water retention.
Bright Sunlight and High UV
Excessive exposure to the sun or unexpected sunburns often contributes to puffy eyes and leave you feeling bloated the next day. Always be sunsmart and wear good quality sunglasses.
Wind
Perth is also known as the windy city. Although welcome in the afternoon, the Fremantle Doctor can be harsh on the eyes. Make sure you wear close fitting sunglasses to keep the wind out of your eyes.
What can you do about bags?
Tip #1 Release Fluid Build Up
• Gently tap your skin where puffy, as this can encourage fluid build up to release and drain more easily.
Tip #2 Use a Cold Compress
• Apply cold compresses to your eyes. Many stores and boutiques sell gel filled eye packs. Stick them in the freezer for a few minutes and apply to your eyes.
Tip #3 Revitalise with Vegetables
• Grate some potatoes or place cucumber wedges on your eyes, and lay down for 10 minutes. This may help reduce swelling and help brighten your skin.
Tip #4 Sooth with Milk
• Soak a cloth in cold milk and apply over your eyes for 10 minutes. This will help reduce puffiness and, like above, help brighten dark circles under your eyes.
Tip #5 Get Plenty of Sleep
• Be sure you are getting at least 8 hours of sleep at night, because too little sleep will lead to dark circles and puffiness.
Tip # 6 Use an Ice Pack
• Try an ordinary ice pack. The cold temperature may help reduce swelling.
Tip #7 Forget Preparation H
There has been an enduring myth that applying a dab of Preparation H, a well know haemorrhoid cream, will tighten the skin and reduce bags.
There is not one shred of evidence that this will work, even the company who makes Preparation H is keen to hose down this myth.
Even though we live in a harsh climate here in Perth, by wearing good sunglasses and taking a few simple steps we can keep the bags at bay.
